fort nelson 001fort nelson 010fort nelson 026fort nelson 022Built in the 1880’s as part of a ring of forts to protect the Naval base at Portsmouth today it is a museum of The Royal Armouries   housing the national collection of artillery there is a collection of over 350 big guns today’s visit was a quick visit to see a new gun on display a WW1 railway gun. Serviced by 25 men and able to fire over 12 miles (could hit my house in Southampton from it’s position at Fort Nelson.) The fort  is well worth a visit for both its guns and for the of the fort it’self (bring a torch)
